Sonic Stones

The Sonic Stones project enables historic monuments such as the giant Sarsen Stones of Avebury Stone Circle to tell visitors the story of their history in a new and engaging way.

The project is an ongoing collaboration between Jay Auborn & Giorgio Cortiana  (Sound Reactions), Professor Mark Gillings (University of Bristol), Robin (Thawney), Ela and Krysna Stott (Bellyfeel) and me.

My role was the design and creation of the interactive device for listening to the stones.

The section view shows the internals of the prototype, designed for 3D printing.

Robin created the electronics and code. With a custom PCB with a cute screenprint of the stone circle. It incorporates a bone-conductive speaker, amplifier, storage, microcontroller, battery and charging.

Here’s Robin and me assembling one of the speakers at Avebury. Soldering is a field!

Here is Mark using the device to listen to one of the Sarsen stones in Avebury.

More to come …
