Form Finding – Differential Growth

Inspired by the beautiful stone sculptures carved by Kim Francis, I thought it would be a fun challenge to create similar forms algorithmically using the software Grasshopper and Kangaroo 2.

The algorithm is a physical simulation of a surface growing over time, simple rules create complex forms using a process known as differential growth, where the surface grows faster towards the edge, leading to rippled forms.

This mimics the natural differential growth in biological systems such as leaves, flowers, shells and coral. Some examples are Curly Kale, Elysia Crispata (sea slug), the leaves of Ornamental Cabbage, and the flowers of Celosia Cristata.
