38km is a pair of Roller skates that transform into shoes. They were designed for my master’s in Innovation Design Engineering at the Royal College of Art. The drive behind this project was sustainable and fun personal urban transportation. The name “38km” is how far you would have to skate instead of driving by car to cancel out the environmental impact of manufacturing the skates.
The step-in mechanism automatically binds onto the plates, and simply pull up the lever to release and step out, no need for a key. This is some sick product design engineering.
Radical urban futuristic styling. The aim here was to create a “concept car” skate styling that would get attention at the show, and I had clubbing outfits from Camden Market that I could wear with these.

Check out the funky toe stops / jam plugs, those cute little axle covers on the wheels and the Innovative queen-pin trucks, these were compact, lightweight and adjustable, a precursor to the Arius plates.

Fully CNCed aluminium plates.
